Before you spend: a Google Ads launch checklist

Define a valuable action

Decide whether success means purchases, qualified leads or calls. Test your measurement and avoid counting one enquiry twice. Document what a conversion represents.

Focus your first campaign

  • Choose locations you can serve.
  • Group closely related searches and offers.
  • Write truthful ads with a clear next step.
  • Check billing, daily budgets and account access.
  • Review search terms and add relevant exclusions.

Check the destination

The page should load well on a phone, explain the offer and make contacting you easy. Test the form and confirmation message. Review the quality of enquiries, not just the number of clicks.

Write a Google Ads launch brief

Start with one offer, an intended customer and a practical outcome. Describe the locations you can serve and the services you want to advertise. Record anything the campaign should avoid, such as unsuitable enquiries or services that are unavailable. This makes later targeting decisions easier to explain.

Identify the people responsible for the campaign, the website and enquiry handling. A small launch can still fail if nobody tests the form or the team is unaware that calls may arrive. Clarify how the business will report whether enquiries are useful.

Review the landing page before paying for traffic

Open the page on a phone. It should explain the advertised service, give accurate practical information and make the next step easy. Match the ad’s promise to what the page can deliver. If the page describes a broad business but the ad promotes one specific service, make sure that service is easy to find.

Test the complete contact route. A working button does not prove that the enquiry reaches the right person. Confirm form delivery, confirmation messages and the handling process. Review our local landing page guide for service businesses.

Use a focused keyword and exclusion review

Group closely related searches around the offer. Ask whether a person making each search is likely to need the advertised service. Consider intent, not just a keyword’s popularity. Keep a record of obvious unsuitable searches so they can inform exclusions where appropriate.

After launch, review reported search terms. They provide evidence about what triggered advertising interactions. Do not assume every term in a keyword plan represents the same customer need. Refine the campaign based on relevant evidence rather than changing settings repeatedly without a clear reason.

Document your conversion definitions

List the actions you record and explain what each means. A submitted enquiry, a contact-button click and a completed purchase have different levels of certainty. Test the tracking and check for duplicate records. Review consent and privacy requirements before installing optional measurement tools.

If you use several systems, agree which one records each stage of the customer journey. Your advertising account may show an interaction while the sales team knows whether it became a useful enquiry. Combine those views carefully, with the relevant permissions and limitations.

Plan the first review before launch

Choose a review that suits the sales cycle and the amount of evidence expected. First confirm delivery and technical functioning. Then assess relevant traffic, enquiry quality and business outcomes. A long buying cycle can make a short reporting period incomplete.

Keep a change log. If you change the offer, the landing page and the targeting together, it may be difficult to explain which change affected the result. Make one meaningful improvement at a time where practical, and note other factors such as availability or seasonality.

Launch checklist FAQs

Should I launch before conversion tracking is checked?

Resolve measurement problems first where practical. Spending without knowing what an event records can make later decisions much less reliable.

Can a large keyword list compensate for a weak offer?

No. More targeting does not explain why a visitor should contact you. Improve the offer and destination as part of the plan.

What if the account records leads but the business dislikes them?
